Street taxis flagged down in tourist areas of Prague are the classic overcharge; the ride apps and marked stands are the safe route. Contactless bank cards also work directly on Prague metro and tram validators for single fares, but the app is cheaper for day and multi-day passes.
Can you rely on free Wi-Fi?
Free Wi-Fi is common and usually decent: hotels, cafés, shopping centres, Václav Havel Airport, most ČD and RegioJet trains, and many Prague trams and buses. It is fine for checking a map, less fine for a video call from a packed tram or for anything sensitive on an open network. Trains lose their onboard connection in tunnels and rural stretches, which is exactly when you want to check a connection in IDOS, so treat Wi-Fi as a bonus and keep your own data on.
Local SIM card or eSIM in Czechia?
Czechia is one of the easier countries in Europe for a local prepaid SIM. There is no mandatory ID registration, so you can buy an O2, T-Mobile, Vodafone or Kaktus starter pack in an operator store, a Žabka or a newsagent for a couple of hundred koruna and load a data bundle in the app. Prices are genuinely low by Western European standards. The friction is the rest of it: finding a store that is open, a Czech-language top-up flow, swapping your home SIM out, and a phone number nobody who needs to reach you has.
