Connectivity tips for Bahrain

  • Check your visa before booking. Many nationalities get a visa on arrival or can apply on the official Bahrain eVisa portal; some must apply in advance.

  • Install the eSIM at home over Wi-Fi, then switch the line on and turn data roaming on for it after landing. Validity typically starts at first connection to a Bahraini network.

  • Your Bahrain plan does not work in Saudi Arabia. For a causeway trip, buy a Saudi plan or a regional Middle East plan in the app before you drive.

  • Careem and Uber both operate, and fares are low by Gulf standards. Agree a price with street taxis or ask for the meter.

  • Race weekends and Saudi weekends fill the hotels and the roads. Book early and allow extra time for the causeway on Thursday and Friday.

  • Summer heat drains batteries fast and camera lenses fog walking out of air conditioning. Carry a power bank and a cloth.

  • Dress modestly for Al Fateh Grand Mosque; scarves and abayas are lent at the entrance, and guided visits are free.

Cards are accepted nearly everywhere, but keep a few dinars in cash for the souq and small taxis. Bahrain does not block internet calling, so you can run WhatsApp and FaceTime calls on the eSIM or on Wi-Fi without workarounds.

Can you rely on free Wi-Fi?

Free Wi-Fi is normal at the airport, in the malls, in cafes in Adliya and Block 338, and in almost every hotel. It is generally fast, and unlike some Gulf neighbours it does not block calling apps, so a video call from your room usually works. What it will not do is follow you to Bahrain Fort, the Tree of Life or a taxi at 1 am, and hotel networks still ask for room numbers and time out. Use Wi-Fi for big downloads and keep the eSIM for maps, rides and calls.

Local SIM card or eSIM in Bahrain?

stc Bahrain and Zain both sell visitor SIMs, with counters at Bahrain International Airport and shops in Seef Mall and City Centre Bahrain. Registration is by passport at the counter, and staff will usually set it up for you. It is a fine option if you are staying weeks and want a local number for deliveries or a bank app. The trade-off is time: you land, queue, register, and only then get online.
