Connectivity tips for Spain
Install the eSIM before departure over Wi-Fi. Madrid-Barajas and Barcelona-El Prat have strong 5G, so it connects on landing.
The Canary Islands are fully part of Spain and the EU roaming zone, so a Spain or Europe plan works there. Note the one-hour time difference.
The Balearics have excellent coverage in resorts; Formentera and the inland Mallorca hills can drop to 4G.
The Europe regional plan carries on into Portugal, France and the rest of the EU. Gibraltar and Andorra are not EU roaming zones, so check before day trips.
Camino de Santiago: download offline maps and stage guides. The Meseta and Galician forest sections have weak signal.
AVE and Avlo trains flicker through tunnels between Madrid and Barcelona. The onboard PlayRenfe Wi-Fi is a fallback for messaging only.
Turn off data roaming on your home SIM to avoid the £2 to £18 daily passes, but keep it active for bank SMS codes.

Bizum, the local payment app, needs a Spanish bank account, so it is not for visitors. Cards and cash work everywhere.
Can you rely on free Wi-Fi?
Good in cities. Barcelona WiFi runs about 2,000 free hotspots in libraries, markets, parks and beaches, Madrid offers free Wi-Fi in cultural centres and the Retiro, and airports and AVE trains have free but throttled Wi-Fi. Resorts and rural areas rely on hotel networks.
Local SIM card or eSIM in Spain?
Spanish law requires every prepaid SIM and eSIM to be registered to a named person with a passport, and some Vodafone and Movistar shops no longer accept foreign ID cards. Prepaid is cheap once registered, from about €10 to €20 for large domestic bundles, though only 15 to 23 GB of it is usable elsewhere in the EU. Buy at official shops rather than airport kiosks, which mark up heavily, and expect siesta-hour and Sunday closures.
For visits under a month, an eSIM is simpler: no passport in a shop, no queue, your home number stays live, and the Europe regional plan carries into Portugal and France. A local SIM only wins for multi-month stays that need a Spanish number.
