Connectivity tips for Mexico
Coverage is Telcel-first. If you leave the big cities, pick a plan on Telcel; AT&T México is noticeably weaker in the Yucatán jungle, Chiapas and the Oaxaca coast.
Holbox has no reliable signal on any network, and Bacalar and El Cuyo are patchy. Download offline maps and your hotel address before boarding the Chiquilá ferry.
WhatsApp is the national phone line. A data-only eSIM is enough to book tours, message hotels and even hail taxis.
Ride-hailing works in Mexico City, Guadalajara, Monterrey, Vallarta and Cabo. At Cancún airport take the ADO bus or an authorised taxi.
Quintana Roo is on UTC−5 while Mexico City is UTC−6, and nobody uses daylight saving. Keep automatic time zone on for flights and buses.
Hurricane season, June to November, can knock out coastal towers for hours. Keep offline copies of bookings and boarding passes.
Most travel eSIMs deliver 4G LTE in Mexico, which is plenty. Expect 20 to 50 Mbps in normal use.

At Cancún airport take the ADO bus or an authorised taxi; ride-hailing apps cannot pick up there. Mexico abolished daylight saving in 2022, so keep automatic time zone on.
Can you rely on free Wi-Fi?
Common in hotels, cafés, ADO buses and resorts. Mexico City holds the record for free public Wi-Fi with around 30,000 hotspots, including Metro stations and parks. Quality varies: good in city cafés, slow on islands and beaches. Avoid banking on open networks.
Local SIM card or eSIM in Mexico?
Telcel Amigo SIM kits cost MXN 29 to 149 at OXXO, Telcel stores and Walmart, with top-ups of roughly MXN 50 to 200 for 0.5 to 6 GB, usually with unlimited WhatsApp and Facebook. Cheap, but the packs favour social apps over the gigabytes you need for maps.
Since 9 January 2026 every Mexican SIM and eSIM must be registered with an ID, a passport for tourists, and unregistered lines are suspended from July 2026. Foreign travel eSIMs operate in roaming mode and are exempt from the registry. A FairSIM eSIM runs on the same Telcel network with no counter and no paperwork.

Local Telcel SIM or travel eSIM?
