Balkans eSIM

A Balkans trip crosses borders fast. Ljubljana to Zagreb is two hours, Split to Mostar is a half day, and a bus from Belgrade can put you in Skopje, Tirana or Sofia by evening. Half of these countries sit outside the EU, so EU roaming rules stop at the border and a single-country plan stops with them. This plan does not.

Coverage matches the single-country plans on each page. In Bosnia and Herzegovina and Moldova expect 4G LTE rather than 5G. Mountain roads in Montenegro and Albania, the Dinaric interior of Bosnia, and ferry crossings to the Greek islands are the usual gaps. Kosovo, Turkey and Ukraine are not on this plan.

Which countries does the Balkans eSIM cover?

Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Greece, Moldova, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Romania, Serbia and Slovenia. The full list shows in the app before you buy.

Do I need to do anything at a border crossing?

No. Keep data roaming on for the FairSIM line and your phone joins the partner network in the next country, usually within a minute or two of the crossing.

Why not just use an EU plan here?

Because Serbia, Bosnia, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Albania and Moldova are outside the EU, so EU roaming does not apply. This plan treats all 11 countries the same.

Is Kosovo included?

No. Kosovo is not on this plan. Check the app for current coverage before you travel if your route goes through Pristina.

Will I get 5G?

In most member countries, yes, where the host network has it. Bosnia and Herzegovina and Moldova are 4G LTE on this plan.

Does it work on long bus and train routes?

Mostly. Intercity buses follow main roads with good coverage, but mountain sections in Montenegro, Albania and inland Bosnia drop out. Download offline maps before those legs.

How much data do I need for two weeks in the Balkans?

Around 10 GB covers maps, bus bookings, messaging and photos across several countries. Go to 20 GB if you stream or work as you travel.

Can I tether to a laptop?

Yes, hotspot works on the FairSIM line. Tethering uses data faster than phone browsing, so pick a larger plan if you plan to work from cafes.

What is an eSIM?

A SIM card built into your phone. Instead of a plastic chip, you download a profile. Every iPhone since the XS has one next to the physical SIM slot, so your home number stays put while FairSIM supplies the data.

Is my phone compatible?

FairSIM works with eSIM-compatible, carrier-unlocked iPhones: the XS, XR and everything newer, on iOS 17.4 or later for the one-tap install with no QR code. iPhones bought in mainland China do not support eSIM at all, even when unlocked. When should I install my eSIM?

Before you travel, while you still have Wi-Fi. Installing does not start your plan; the validity typically starts when the eSIM first connects to a network at your destination.

Do FairSIM eSIMs come with a phone number?

No. FairSIM eSIMs are data-only by design, which keeps costs low. For calls and texts, your physical SIM stays active so you keep your existing number, and WhatsApp, FaceTime and iMessage work over data.
