Connectivity tips for Bermuda

  • Visitors cannot rent a car in Bermuda. Budget for buses, ferries, taxis, a scooter or an electric minicar, and book the minicar well ahead in summer.

  • Install the eSIM at home over Wi-Fi and switch the line on after landing. Validity typically starts at the first connection to a Bermudian network.

  • The speed limit is 35 km/h island-wide and roads are narrow with stone walls. Mount your phone for navigation rather than holding it.

  • Buy a multi-day transportation pass for buses and ferries if you are staying a week; it covers both and saves queuing for tokens.

  • Pink-topped bus stop poles point toward Hamilton, blue-topped poles point away. Getting this wrong costs an hour.

  • US dollars and Bermudian dollars trade one for one, but BMD notes are worthless once you leave. Spend your change before the airport.

  • Watch the Bermuda Weather Service in August to October. Hurricane tracks change fast and ferries stop before the airport closes.

  • Keep your home SIM in the phone with data roaming off, so bank verification codes still arrive while the eSIM carries the data.

  • Uber Eats alternatives most Bermuda restaurants take delivery and takeout orders by phone or WhatsApp rather than through a global app.

There is no Uber or Lyft in Bermuda. Taxis are licensed, metered and best booked through Hitch or your hotel, and visitors cannot rent a car, so your realistic options are bus, ferry, taxi, scooter or an electric minicar. Bus stop poles are colour coded: pink tops for buses heading toward Hamilton, blue tops for buses heading away.

Can you rely on free Wi-Fi?

Hotels, guesthouses, the Dockyard visitor areas, Hamilton cafés and many restaurants have free Wi-Fi, and it is usually fine for email and messaging. It stops at the door. The beaches, the Railway Trail, the bus and most ferry crossings have none, and that is exactly where you need the timetable, the map or the taxi app. Storm season also takes island connections down for hours at a time, which is the moment a mobile line on a different network earns its price.

Local SIM card or eSIM in Bermuda?

Digicel and One Communications both sell prepaid SIMs and data top-ups on the island, mainly from their shops in Hamilton and a few retail outlets. L.F. Wade International is a small airport, and there is no dependable round-the-clock SIM counter waiting for you after a late flight. If your first move is a taxi to the South Shore at 10pm, a local SIM is not going to be in your phone that night.
